Stop Calling Hiding Humility

Gideon is literally doing farm work in a hole, trying not to get noticed, and that’s when God shows up and calls him “a mighty man of valor.” That contrast is the spark for today’s Everyday Carry, because most of us know what it’s like to keep our heads down, play it safe, and tell ourselves we’re being humble when we’re really just hiding.

We walk through Judges 6 with the pressure of the Midianites, the strange image of threshing wheat in a wine press, and Gideon’s honest pushback: “If the Lord is with us, why has all this happened?” Then we sit with God’s answer, because it’s not a pep talk and it’s not a correction of Gideon’s weakness. It’s a commission. “Go in this might of yours” reminds us that the might isn’t self-confidence, status, or talent. The might is that God has spoken and God has sent.

From there, we bring it home for Christian men who want real spiritual growth, courage, and leadership that actually holds up under pressure. If you’ve been avoiding risk, staying quiet at work, shrinking back from leading your household, or pressing down a specific sin, we name the hard truth: fear can masquerade as humility. Alright, men, welcome back to episode number three of Everyday Carry, a daily word for men. Hey, you've made it this far. We're halfway through the first week, and I want to applaud you for showing up again because, you know, again, we're letting this thing lead itself. We're letting God take care of us, and I'm just excited that you showed up again today. So stick with me here because today we are in Judges 6. Israel's being crushed by the Midianites, and we find a man named Gideon threshing wheat inside of a wine press. You know what that is? Well, okay. So here's

Called Mighty While Afraid

why the detail matters. If you know what threshing is, you know you don't thresh wheat in a hole in the ground. You thresh it out in the open. You usually you would climb to the top of a hill somewhere, you would do it where the wind can blow, and as you're kind of threshing the wheat, all the husks, the holes, whatever you want to call it, the outer shell is light enough that it as it cracks off of there, it blows away in the wind, and the grain falls down because it's heavier, it's it's more dense, it's gonna fall to the ground, and you have a pile of grain that falls, and the chaff scatters away in the wind. So Gideon's doing this though in a hole in the ground. He's doing it in a wine press, hiding from raiders, because he's scared. And that right there is the exact moment that the angel of the Lord shows up, and in verse 12, you know what he says? He says, The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor. Hang on. I gotta read that again. The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor. Okay, you you see what he did there? God doesn't call him future mighty man of valor or mighty man of valor once you get your act together. He calls the man hiding in a pit a mighty man of valor. That's present tense for those of you who are English nerds. Before Gideon has done a single valorous thing, that's what he calls it. So Gideon's response in verse 13 is basically an argument. He says, If the Lord is with us, well then why has all this happened? Where are all the wonders that our father has told us about? And then in verse 15, he actually doubles down. He doesn't get better, he gets worse. My clan is the weakest, and I'm the least in my father's house. Sound familiar? Well, it's the same excuse making that we saw in Moses yesterday. But here's the deal. Watch what God does. Same as he did with Moses, he doesn't correct Gideon's self-assessment. No, he doesn't need to. He doesn't say, No, no, no, you're not actually weak. In verse 14, he actually says, Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of the Midian. Do not I send you. This might of yours. The might that God is pointing to isn't Gideon's strength. It's the fact that God has spoken to him and sent him. That's the might. The calling itself is the qualification.

Fear Disguised As Humility

So, here's the deal. A lot of men are living in a wine press. Maybe you're one of them. You're hiding, playing small, playing it safe, you're staying quiet, avoiding the risk. And you're calling it humility. It's not humility. Humility is actually knowing what God says about your calling and choosing to walk in it, anyways. Not using your fear as a theology. So, Gideon eventually leads Israel to a real victory, but only after he stops arguing and starts obeying. And that leads us to today's charge.

Name Your Wine Press And Step Out

Alright, let's get real. What is your wine press? What's that one area of your life? Is it leading your household? Maybe it's speaking truth at work? Or is it confronting a certain specific sin in yourself that you've been pressing down just a little too long? What's the area that you've been hiding out of fear and calling it caution? Today I want you to name it, and then I want you to take one step out of that hole. It's gonna look different for everybody here, but I want you to do it. You got this with his help.
