Most men say they want real brotherhood, but what we often build is a comfort club: same jokes, same complaints, zero challenge. I’m digging into Proverbs 27:17 and the gritty truth behind it: iron sharpens iron only through friction, pressure, and something getting shaved off that never needed to be there in the first place.

We talk about why “nice” friendships can still leave you dull, stuck, and spiritually sleepy. If nobody can ask you the uncomfortable question, call out the drift in your marriage, or tell you a joke crossed the line, that isn’t sharpening, it’s avoidance. I also bring in Proverbs 27:6 to draw the line between faithful wounds and empty flattery, because a friend who tells the truth at the right time is loving you harder than someone who keeps you comfortable.

Then we make it practical with the idea of a “mat carrier” friend: the brother who will pay a cost to help get you closer to Jesus. I challenge you to name the man who has the courage to speak hard truth into your life, thank him if you already have him, and if you don’t, go close that gap and deputize someone to step into it. Alright, Thursday, Thursday, Thursday. We are almost through with week number two. Welcome back, brother. I am Brian Crumb, your host, and I'm glad you're still with me. Today, we're looking at Proverbs 27:17. Nine words that most of us are probably pretty familiar with. Iron sharpens iron and one man sharpens another. Honestly, most of us have probably heard this verse so many times that it's actually lost its edge. Yep, that was a pun. Enjoy it.

Friction Is How Sharpening Works

But let's actually look at the bigger picture here. When iron sharpens iron, there's friction. You see, there's heat, there's metal being worn away. Sharpening isn't some gentle process. It doesn't just happen accidentally when two soft objects sit near each other. No, no, no. It happens through pressure, through contact, and through something getting removed that didn't need to be there.

Comfort Based Friendships Stay Dull

Now, this is not how most guys build friendships today. Most male friendship today runs on shared comfort. Maybe it's the same hobbies or having a similar job. Maybe it's similar complaints or the avoidance of something that might actually cost us something relationally. You see, we call a guy a good friend if he never challenges us and if he never says the hard thing. If he never asks the uncomfortable question, hmm, that is fine by me. But in Proverbs, it actually tells us that's not sharpening. That's just two dull blades sitting next to each other, staying dull together. I kind of made the reference a while back. It kind of is like two floppy pool noodles just slapping out there. Don't think on that too

Faithful Wounds And Mat Carriers

much. Real brotherhood, biblical brotherhood, includes friction. It includes a brother who's willing to say, I think you're wrong about that. Or, hey, I've noticed you pulling away from your wife lately. Or, uh, bud, that joke, too far. You see, that's not a violation of love. That is love. Proverbs 27, 6, a few verses later, says it very plainly. Faithful are the words of a friend, profuse are the kisses of an enemy. The friend who wounds you with truth is loving you harder than the guy who flatters you and lets you stay dull. And this is exactly the kind of friendship the mat carriers had, if you think back to Monday. It cost them something. Sweat, reputation, there's a lot of risk there. A hole in somebody's roof. Just to get their friend in front of Jesus. You see, real brotherhood always costs something. If it's not costing you anything, you might want to check and see whether it's actually sharpening you or just keeping you comfortable. Which of course leads us to today's charge.

Find And Deputize A Truth Teller

So here's the carry for today. I want you to think of a brother who's got the standing and the courage to speak hard truth into your life. That is your MAT carrier that we've been talking about. Now, me personally, I'm very blessed to have two actually. Uh, shout out to Scott and Cullen. You guys are the absolute best, and I'm really thankful to have you guys in my corner. Now, if you don't have one, that's the gap you're gonna want to close this week. And if you do have one, though, reach out and thank him for it today. Or better yet, ask him if there's something he's been holding back and telling you, and then be ready when he answers. Oh, and if you've got someone in mind but you just haven't asked him yet, man up and go deputize him, just like Pastor Joby Martin says over at the Church of 1122. They can't help you if they don't know you're looking for him to help. So tell them, speak up, be a man.
