What If Church Is Where You Get Provoked

Hebrews 10:24-25 gets quoted at men like a warning: “Don’t skip church.” But if you read the verses in order, the spotlight lands somewhere else, and it’s a lot more personal. We walk through the passage and argue that meeting together is the setting, while the real command is to consider and stir up one another toward love and good works. That means church is not a place to disappear into a crowd. It’s where we take responsibility for the men beside us.

We dig into the force of the original language. “Consider” is more than a quick thought; it’s close observation and deliberate strategy. “Stir up” is even stronger, tied to a word that can mean provoke or needle sharply, and it shows up elsewhere to describe a sharp conflict between Paul and Barnabas. The Holy Spirit isn’t calling us to convenient, gentle vibes. He’s calling Christian men to purposeful brotherhood that actually changes behavior.

Then we tie the whole week together: devotion to teaching, fellowship, the table, and prayer; leaders qualified by character; preaching that stays true; and equipping that sends men out steady instead of getting blown around. The punchline is simple: the men around you aren’t your audience, they’re your assignment. We close with three small weekend actions you can take immediately, plus a caution for next week’s topic on testing your church without becoming “a critic with a Bible.”

Hebrews 10 Read The Right Way

week is down, brothers, and we're closing out week three on the one verse about church that gets quoted at men more than any other. And it gets read backwards almost every single time. You've probably heard it. Hebrews 10, verses 24 and 25, and let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near. Now, which half of that did you just hear quoted? Verse 25. Verse 25, that isn't the command. It's the setting. The command is actually verse 24, and usually we skip right past it. Look

Study Men And Stir Them Up

at both verbs there, because the Greek is actually stronger than English. First, let us consider. That's katanoeo. To observe closely, to study a thing all the way through. That's not a passing thought. You're commanded to strategize. Second, and this one should get your attention, stir up. That noun is paroxusmos. It's the root of our word paroxysm. And it means to provoke, to incite, to needle sharply. And here's the detail I love. The only other place that word family appears in the New Testament is Acts 15, verse 39, describing the sharp, bitter falling out between Paul and Barnabas. That's how strong it is. The Holy Spirit chose an aggressive word on purpose. The instruction isn't gently encourage one another when convenient. It's study how to provoke specific men to word love and good works. Put the verses back in order and it reads like this Figure out deliberately how to get under the skin of the men around you in the direction of love and good works.

Attendance Is The Venue

And by the way, you can't do that if you never show up. Assembly is the venue, provoking is the point. Which means, brother, and I'll say this as directly as I can a man can have perfect attendance and still be disobedient to this passage. Show up every Sunday, take your seat, take the teaching, provoke nobody, and you're keeping the smaller half of the command whose main verb you never touch. This verse gets used as a club to get men in the building. Read it in order, and it's the opposite. It assumes you're already in the building and asks, What are you doing to the men on either side of you? Now, let me tie the week together here, because this is where all five days land. Monday, Acts 2, a church is stubbornly devoted to teaching, fellowship, table, and prayer. Tuesday, 1 Timothy 3, the men who lead it are qualified by character, not charisma, and you're supposed to know who they are. Wednesday, 2 Timothy 4. The preacher is a herald who delivers the message intact,

Five Days That Put Weight On You

in season and out, when they want it, when they don't. And the congregation usually creates the demand for something other. Well, Thursday, Ephesians 4, all of it exists to put you in working order and send you out because an unequipped man gets blown around. And today we fall on Hebrews 10. The men around you are not your audience. They're your assignment. See what that adds up to? Every one of those five days puts the weight on you. It puts it squarely on me. Not one of them lets us sit in the back and grade the room. And that's exactly why we start here instead of with the warnings. Now next week we're gonna learn to test the church you're sitting in, whether it's leading you well or drifting, and what a man does about it. We'll do that honestly. But we'll do it in this order on purpose. Because a man who learns to test a church before he's learned to be devoted, to know his elders, to take hard preaching, and to provoke his brothers, that man doesn't become discerning. He just becomes a critic with a Bible. Be the other thing first, okay? And that leads me to our Friday charge.

Weekend Carry Three Small Steps

So here's the carry for this weekend. You ready for this? Three things, and they're all really small. One, I want you to pull out the list that you made on Monday, the four marks. Read it once. Don't act on it, don't send it anywhere. Just bring it into next week. Number two, before Sunday, I want you to pick one man at your church, and I want you to ask him one real question about his walk with Christ. One that he can't answer with, I'm good, man. We're fine. When's the last time that God convicted you of something? That's a good idea, right? It's a good starter. That one works. That's your provoking. It'll be awkward. Do it anyway. And number three, Sunday. I want you to walk in with your Bible open to the text instead of just your seat saved. And I want you to bring a pen. Because you're gonna need it on Monday.
