Welcome back to Everyday Carrie. Yesterday, the Bereans showed us that examining a teacher against Scripture is actually called noble. And today, we start naming what to actually look for. And we start at the only place that you can start. The gospel itself.

Galatians And Zero Warm-Up

Galatians 1, and I need you to understand how unusual this letter is. Because every other letter Paul writes opens with thanksgiving. He tells the Corinthians he thanks God for them, and the Corinthians were a total mess. Not here. Galatians 1, 6 says, I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and turning to a different gospel. Not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. There's no warm-up here. Another gospel of a different kind. And then he immediately corrects himself, not that there is another one, because Paul won't even let the phrase stand, there's the gospel, and then there's a distortion pretending to be the gospel.

Credentials Cannot Correct Error

There is no second gospel. Then verses 8 and 9, and this is where it gets severe, but even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preach to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, now I say again, if anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one that you've received, let him be accursed. He says it twice. And the word there, the Greek, is anathema. Anathema. Devoted to destruction. Now, look at who Paul puts under that sentence. Even if we Paul includes himself here. Or an angel from heaven. Anyone looking into a, you know, hat with stones in it or anything? Paul is establishing something enormous here. The gospel is not subject to the credentials of whoever's preaching it. Not his own apostleship, not a heavenly being. If the message is wrong, the messenger's resume doesn't save it. And here's the thing you'd expect

The Subtle Pattern Of Gospel Drift

and don't get. The Galatian churches weren't denying Christ. Nobody there was preaching against Jesus. The problem was addition to. They were adding requirements to the finished work of Christ. The message stayed warm. It stayed about Jesus. It just stopped being the gospel. So let me describe the pattern, and I'm going to describe it very carefully because I'm not naming any one church or specific man this week. Instead, I'm actually just going to describe a shape. You'll know if you've seen it. So pay attention. The pattern is not a church that attacks the gospel. It's a church where the gospel quietly loses its parts. Okay? Let me say that again. The pattern that you are going to be looking for is not a church that attacks the gospel. It's not against the word or it doesn't dismiss the word. But it's a church where the gospel quietly loses parts and therefore becomes incomplete. It goes like this. Sin stops getting named. It doesn't just get denied. It it just doesn't get mentioned. And if sin isn't named, well then repentance isn't needed, right? And if repentance isn't needed, well then the cross becomes a symbol of how much you're loved rather than the payment for what you did. Now don't get me wrong, the payment happened because you're loved, but the cross is a symbol for the payment. And if there's no payment, well then Christ isn't Lord, he's just a great life coach. And what's left is encouragement. Now, hear me, encouragement itself is not evil. Scripture's full of it. It's just not the thing that saves anybody. It doesn't save you, doesn't save me.

The Three Questions For A Pulpit

That's the test for today, brother. Not is the preaching harsh enough? Ask over the last year, has this pulpit named Sin? Has it called for repentance? And has it pointed to the cross as the only payment for it? Not just once in a special series, not just on Easter or Christmas, but as the ordinary diet. Like if you have to think about this very hard, you might be in the church I'm talking about.

The Five Sentence Gospel Challenge

The harder question here, the one that keeps this from being about somebody else, is would you know the gospel well enough to notice if a piece did go missing? Hmm. Because most men today, they don't. Most of us could tell you Jesus died for our sins, but couldn't walk another man through why that was necessary. And a man who can't articulate the gospel can't detect a counterfeit of it. That's not the pulpit's failure, that's ours. Of course, that leads us to today's charge. Alright, so here's what I want you to carry for today. I want you to write out the gospel in five sentences from memory. No phone, no lookup, no Google. Who God is, what sin is, what Christ did, what repentance is, what following Him costs. Five sentences. It should take you like 10 minutes, but it's probably gonna be harder than you think. Then I want you to look at what you wrote and ask where you learned that. Was it in a service or was it on your own? Either answer is useful. Both make it your responsibility from here, though.
