Isolation does not usually announce itself. It whispers, “Skip it,” “Don’t reply,” “You’re busy,” and before we know it, we have built a life where nobody is close enough to challenge our thinking. Today we sit with Proverbs 18:1 and let it say what it says: the man who isolates himself seeks his own desire and breaks out against all sound judgment. That is not just about feeling lonely. It is about how a Christian man’s judgment can bend when there is no brotherhood nearby to bring clarity, correction, and encouragement.

We slow down on the uncomfortable part: isolation is often a verb, not a victim story. We talk about the pull toward comfort, preferences, and doing life our own way, and why that posture quietly pushes wise counsel out of reach. We also make an important distinction for spiritual health: solitude is not the sin. Jesus withdraws to lonely places to pray, and rest can be faithful. The danger is when distance becomes our default, and we start making decisions with no one close enough to truly know what we are choosing.

Then we make it practical with a simple audit. We look back just two weeks at our calendar and our phone and pinpoint one specific place we chose isolation over a brother: a text we did not return, an invite we turned down, a call we kept postponing. The charge is clear and small enough to do today: close that gap, and reach out specifically, not generically.

back to Everyday Carry. Yesterday, Sullivan told us that two are better than one for practical structural reasons, not just warm ones. And today, Proverbs names the man who ignores that, and spoiler alert, it doesn't go easy on him.

Proverbs 18:1 Names Isolation

Proverbs 18.1 tells us, whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire. He breaks out against all sound judgment. Let's read that again. The first three words, whoever isolates himself. That's not a man that circumstances did something to, that's a verb that he performs. You see, the Hebrew behind it is actually parad, to separate or to break off from something that you were originally joined to. This isn't a man who never had brothers, it's a man who had them and he pulled away. And I want you to look at what Solomon says is actually driving it. Seeks his own desire. Not has been hurt, not is too busy, but seeks his own desire, his own preferences, his own comfort, his own way of doing things without anybody close enough to push back on any of it. And then the second half is the part that most men skip past pretty quickly. He breaks out against all sound judgment. Isolation doesn't just cost you company. Proverbs says it actively fights wisdom. A man alone with his own thoughts long enough will eventually talk himself out of good judgment because nothing in the room disagrees with him. Now,

Solitude Is Not The Sin

let me give the gentle rebuke here because this proverb gets misused to guilt trip men a lot of times when they simply need to rest. You see, solitude isn't the sin here, and I would caution anyone who says so to check themselves. Jesus himself withdrew to lonely places to pray. Luke tells us that very plainly. A man who takes an evening alone to think or pray, or just to breathe, well, that man's not violating Proverbs 18.1. The man that this verse is describing is actually the one whose default posture toward other men has become distance. The one who's quietly decided he doesn't need anybody close enough to actually know what he's deciding. Sometimes that's because you think it'll slow you down. Sometimes you think it's because others just won't understand what you need. But whatever it is, you decided it on your own.

But here's the part that should land the hardest with us. You see, this isn't usually dramatic. Most guys don't just drop off the face of the planet all at once. They isolate one canceled plan, one unanswered text, one skipped gathering at a time. And we call it being busy. By the time it's obvious, it's already been happening for months, which leads us to today's charge. So

The Two-Week Phone And Calendar Check

here is the carry for today, and I want you to look at your calendar and your phone just from the last two weeks. Don't go back any further, don't worry about that. But go back for the last two weeks, and I want you to pinpoint one specific place where you chose isolation over a brother. Maybe it's a text you didn't return, an invite you turned down, a call that you meant to make, but you just didn't do that. Well, today I want you to close that gap. Reach out to that man. Specifically, not generically. That's all
