Every man carries something, and some of what we’re hauling was never ours to pick up. Today we bring that question into the open, then we put “brotherhood” under a brighter light than most of us are used to.

We go to 1 Samuel 18:1–4, right after David kills Goliath, and we watch Jonathan the crown prince respond to the man who just became a threat to his future. Scripture says Jonathan’s soul is knit to David’s, and we slow down to show what that kind of binding really means: covenant friendship, not casual vibes. This is biblical brotherhood for Christian men that holds up under pressure, temptation, and rivalry, because it is chosen and spoken, not merely felt.

Then we get uncomfortably practical. Jonathan doesn’t just offer kind words he hands over his robe, armor, sword, bow, and belt, the symbols of his identity and rank. That’s the point: encouragement is good, but words alone are cheap. Real Christian community and accountability often costs time, resources, comfort, and pride. Sometimes it even means being genuinely glad for a brother’s rise when it changes your own plans.

David And Jonathan In Focus

And we're back, middle of the week, brother, and I am glad you're still here with me. Yesterday we named the man who isolates himself, and today we're going to look at what the opposite of that actually looks like in full color between two real men. 1 Samuel 18, verses 1 through 4. David has just killed Goliath. He's standing in front of King Saul, and Saul's son Jonathan is watching. It says, As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him, and he gave it to David with his armor, including his sword and his bow and his belt.

Knit Together Covenant Loyalty

Now, ran it in here for a second. I want us to go back and start with the phrase knit to. The Hebrew there is kashar, or to bind, to tie together tightly, the way that you'd knot two cords so they function as one. This isn't Scripture's language for a guy you get along with or a buddy that you work alongside. No, it's the language of something fastened. Now, consider who Jonathan was. He was the crown prince. You see, David killing Goliath had just made David the obvious threat to Jonathan's own throne. Every incentive in that room told Jonathan to see David as a rival, but instead, verse 3 says that he made a covenant with him, a deliberate, spoken commitment, not just a feeling that happened to him. Then verse 4 actually gets very specific in a real way that we tend to usually rush past. Jonathan didn't just say kind words. No, he stripped off his own robe and he gave it to David. He gave him his armor, his sword, his bow, his belt. In that culture, a prince's robe and the weapons that he had were the visible marks of his own rank and identity. Jonathan handed over the actual symbols of who he was to a shepherd that he'd known for what? Maybe an hour? Here's what that should correct in us, though, gently, but directly.

Brotherhood That Costs Something Real

You see, we've created a pretty boring definition of brotherhood. We've made it mostly a matter of words. Encouragement, compliments, maybe a little inside joke here and there, the right thing said at the right moment. Sure, those things in themselves aren't bad, but they're not the definition. They're not the standard. Jonathan here, he shows us a covenant loyalty that actually costs us something material. Something we can hand over and feel the weight leave our own hands. Words are good, but words alone, that's cheap. And it isn't brotherhood. And I also want you to notice something here. This cost Jonathan something very real. Scripture doesn't hide the fact that this friendship eventually meant Jonathan backing the man who would take the throne that he was born to inherit. Real brotherhood, the Keshar kind, sometimes means being genuinely glad for a brother's rise even when it isn't your own. And for the couple of you asking, yes, that includes a father or a son as well. The word brother here is talking about our brotherhood of men, so don't get nitpicky. Let's get back on charge

Today’s Charge And Closing Call

here, okay? So speaking of charge, that leads us to today's charge. So here's the carry for today. I want you to give something away for a brother that actually costs you something. Not advice, not a compliment, an object, or an hour that you would normally protect. Your time this evening, a tool he's needed to borrow, maybe it's something with weight to it. Do it today. And don't explain it as a big gesture. Don't explain that you heard it on the podcast and well, you're just doing this thing. No, just hand it over. That's it. That's the charge for today. And that's all the time we have for today. We're halfway through the week, so don't quit now. Remember to take up your cross today and follow him, and I'll see you back here tomorrow.
